'The Tree'

Here is my contemporary quilted wall hanging 'The Tree' which was awarded 1st prize at the annual Quilts UK exhibition held at the Malvern Three Counties show ground in May 2008.  It was entered in the theme category 'Architecture' and was inspired by Gaudi's La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

The Tree Wallhanging

My wall hanging is made in three parts the tree, two stain glass panels and three suspended hexagons.  The Tree represents the pillars supporting the vaults. In La Sagrada Familia the vaults emerge from the tree like columns and form palm leaves which represent the symbol of martyrdom. Two stained glass panels form the back drop for the hexagons.

The panels represent the Window of White Light.  Finally the hexagon panels were created from a photograph I had taken of one of the vaults. A section of the photograph was put into a Kaleidoscope computer program and three different patterns were formed.  Three textile /quilt artists have been very inspirational to me during the creation of this project, Sandra Meech, Ineke Berlyn and Jean Draper.
